Hollins, Baltimore’s oldest public market
Baltimore has to be considered one of the great market towns in North America and has the longest standing market system still operating in a US city.
The Municipal Markets of Baltimore, headed up by the amiable Caspar Genco, are comprised of seven markets (there were once eleven). Cross Street Market, Federal Hill. Hollins Street Market, Union Square Historic District. Broadway Market, Fells Point. Belair Market, Old Town Mall. Northeast Market, north of Patterson Park. Lafayette Market, Sandtown Winchester. Lexington Market, Lexington and Howard Streets.
Each has an interesting story that is still being written, and I hope to report more on Baltimore markets in the future.
The grande dame of Baltimore’s markets – Hollins Market – is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year – so -Hip hip hooray and Happy Birthday Hollins!
I am going to the Northeast Market (since 1884) in Baltimore this week with Project for Public Spaces. We are going help boost its status as a healthy food hub in the historic market district.
