New Vision for the ByWard Market in Ottawa
I finally made it to Ottawa (one of the cities on my bucket list) to work with Project for Public Spaces on a new chapter for the historic and popular ByWard Market District. We were hired by the City of Ottawa and the District’s Business Improvement Association to engage the community and create a new vision for the entire market district – one of the liveliest places in all of Ontario.
ByWard Market has been a selling and gathering place for nearly three centuries and is now facing new challenges to keep up with the times.

The district is experiencing a major growth spurt attracting scores of new businesses, restaurants and residents. No longer a quiet place at night, it transforms from a popular daytime food and crafts market with indoor/outdoor stalls to a major entertainment center at night with nearly 17,000 barstools and restaurant seats within a few blocks of the market. Challenging as it may be, it will all work out for the best. Vive le Marche By! The physical scale and character of the market distroct provides an authentic backdrop, but ‘use’ preservation and maintaining its roots to the local producers and economy will show the way to the most durable and worthwhile future..
